An Introduction

The World Maker Alliance (WMEA)—with support by the China Education Equipment Industry Association (CEEIA) and its China Education Equipment Industry Creative Branch— believes that “Be CREATIVE; ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERE.” needs to be further promoted into a future of education that nurtures 21st century learning skills hand in hand with technology literacy.

Within the WMEA it is believed that there is a need for educators and learners to become increasingly enabled, and to bring together & foster transnational creative initiatives & individuals from within the science, areas of design & engineering, while also for the educators & learners to be enabled to obtain joint access to stimulating & immersive communal spaces of learning and making.

WMEA members feel that creative communities need this so that a culture of creativity can be shared and inherited by future generations.

Hence the founders of the WMEA invited close to 100 participants in an international Maker Education Forum organized at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, located in Beǐjīng, as well as at the Normal University of Nánjīng, China. This inaugurating event occurred in December 2015.

The Group is since March 2016 an official non-profit organization registered within the USA. On December 29th 2016 some of its stakeholders also inaugurated a CEEIA Creative Education Branch which, although independent, is supportive of the work the WMEA participants have been and are foreseen to be engaged into.

In 2016 the organizers and stakeholders organized the second annual meeting in partnership with CEEIA during the latter’s 71st Conference in China’s Náníng city, Guăngxī Province and this from the 17th November until the 22nd November 2016.

WMEA Framework

WMEA is a non-for-profit shouldered by domestic & international experts in the areas of Science & Technology, Design & Technology, STEM, STEAM, ICT, Vocational and Maker Education.

Although the WMEA commenced within China, its focus of attention is on bringing together education / learning communities from around the world and enable these to communicate across boarders on matters of relevance to their own local needs and to the shared needs and findings.

The WMEA supports communication among its participants towards the exploration of enabling futures in learning and education.

WMEA Strategy

The WMEA  builds towards a sustained convergence of like-minded actors from communities across the globe through various media and events and in areas that share a sufficient amount of attributes to find a growing understanding of possible futures in education and learning under an umbrella of Maker Education.

As such the initiative considers and invites strategies that create and nurture this global network of like-minded actors that are in turn invited to communicate, share, promote and aim at increasing convergent aspects of “STEAMS.” This is balanced to occur while each actor in their own right are individually working towards localized enablers of increasing literacy standards in some or all of the Sciences + Technologies + Engineering + the liberal Arts + Mathematics + 21st Century Social and communal characteristics and skills, via learning processes in localized design and making which could increase human capital and a learner’s awareness of processes at local and interconnected global levels.

WMEA Movers & Shakers

The WMEA is comprised of individuals who work in Science & Technology, Design & Technology, ICT, STEM, STEAM, maker- and hackerspaces. The majority of these individuals represent communities, schools, academic institutions, governmental institutions, non-for-profits as well as commercial entities.

Up till today these experts have been policy-makers, government officials, academics & researchers, scientists, engineers, technologists, community leaders and (social) entrepreneurs— each of whom expressed a professional, research or public interest in educators, learners as designers and grassroots makers, artisans, tinkerers & “hackers”.

WMEA is made possible because of  the kind support of each of its participants and to a certain extent because of supporters from within the China Educational Equipment Industry Association (which is in turn supported by its nation’s Ministry of Education) and its CEEIA Creative Education Branch.
